The Abhay Prabhavana is envisioned as a landmark interpretive destination dedicated to presenting the profound philosophical and cultural legacy of Jainism through contemporary experiential design. The project seeks to translate one of the world’s oldest and most sophisticated knowledge traditions into an immersive visitor experience that resonates with modern audiences.

Rather than presenting religion through traditional displays of artefacts and historical chronology, the Experience Centre explores Jain philosophy as a living intellectual system—one that addresses ethics, ecology, consciousness, and human responsibility.

Lokusdesign was entrusted with shaping the experience narrative, spatial journey, and exhibition environments, transforming complex philosophical ideas into immersive interpretive spaces that invite visitors to discover, reflect, and engage. Through scenographic environments, multimedia storytelling, and symbolic spatial design, the Experience Centre presents Jain philosophy not merely as a historical tradition but as a timeless framework for ethical and mindful living.

The Challenge

Designing a museum around philosophy rather than artefacts required addressing several conceptual challenges.

Translating Philosophy into Spatial Experience

Jainism encompasses a vast body of metaphysical, ethical, and cosmological thought developed over millennia. The challenge was to translate these abstract philosophical ideas into spatial experiences that visitors could intuitively understand and emotionally connect with.

Moving Beyond Religious Representation

The project was envisioned not simply as a devotional space but as a knowledge-driven interpretive environment that presents Jain philosophy through logic, inquiry, and experiential learning.

The museum, therefore, needed to balance spiritual depth with intellectual clarity, appealing to both believers and curious learners.

Creating a Cohesive Narrative Journey

The Experience Centre comprises multiple thematic galleries exploring different dimensions of Jain philosophy and civilisation. The challenge was to orchestrate these galleries into a coherent narrative progression that guides visitors through a layered journey of discovery.

Lokusdesign’s Strategic Approach

Lokusdesign approached the project as a civilisational storytelling experience, structuring the visitor journey around the progressive unfolding of knowledge. The experience was designed to move through four interpretive layers that gradually expand the visitor’s understanding:

Understanding → Exploration → Reflection → Civilisational Insight

The narrative therefore evolves from the foundations of Jain philosophy to its cultural legacy, contemporary relevance, and its place within the broader Indian civilisational ethos.

Experience Narrative

The Experience Centre unfolds as a carefully choreographed journey across multiple immersive environments.

Arrival and Orientation

The visitor journey begins with an orientation environment introducing the philosophical depth and cultural significance of Jainism. Through multimedia storytelling, visitors are introduced to the origins, worldview, and guiding principles of Jain philosophy before beginning their exploration of the galleries. This space prepares visitors to engage with the deeper philosophical ideas presented throughout the experience.

Part 1 – Foundations of Jain Philosophy

The first sequence of galleries introduces visitors to the core metaphysical and ethical concepts that underpin the Jain thought.

These galleries explore themes such as:

• the nature of the soul (Jiva)
• the doctrine of karma
• the structure of the universe
• the relationship between consciousness and matter.

Through immersive environments and interpretive storytelling, visitors encounter the intellectual depth of Jain metaphysics and its profound understanding of existence.

The Path of Ethical Living

A series of experiential galleries interprets the ethical principles that define Jain practice.

Key philosophical values explored include:

• Ahimsa — non-violence toward all living beings
• Anekantavad — multiplicity of viewpoints
• Aparigraha — non-possessiveness
• self-discipline and spiritual restraint.

These principles are presented through spatial metaphors and interactive storytelling environments that illustrate their relevance in everyday life.

Visitors begin to understand Jain philosophy as a practical guide for ethical living.

Samavasaran — The Space of Enlightenment

One of the most immersive environments within the Experience Centre interprets the concept of Samavasaran, the divine preaching hall where enlightened teachers share universal knowledge. This dramatic spatial installation symbolises the moment when spiritual wisdom becomes accessible to all beings.

Through light, sound, and symbolic scenography, the environment evokes the transition from ignorance to enlightenment. The space invites visitors to pause, reflect, and contemplate the deeper meaning of knowledge and compassion.

Part 2 – Cultural Legacy of Jain Civilisation

The narrative then shifts from philosophy to civilisation.

This section celebrates the extraordinary contributions of Jain communities to the cultural and intellectual history of India.

Visitors explore the rich legacy of:

• temple architecture
• sacred art and iconography
• manuscript traditions
• literature and scholarship.

Through immersive storytelling environments, the galleries demonstrate how philosophical ideas shaped artistic and cultural expression across centuries.

Dedicated galleries honour the spiritual leaders, monks, and scholars who preserved and transmitted Jain philosophy across generations. These spaces highlight the role of spiritual leadership, learning, and discipline in sustaining philosophical traditions over time. The narrative reinforces the idea that knowledge survives not only through texts but through living communities of practice and learning.

Part 3 – Journey to Happiness

The third interpretive layer explores the relevance of Jain values for contemporary life.

Visitors encounter themes such as:

• mindful living
• environmental responsibility
• ethical consumption
• inner peace and self-realisation.

The galleries demonstrate how ancient philosophical insights offer powerful guidance for addressing modern global challenges such as ecological imbalance and social conflict.

This part of the experience reframes Jain philosophy as a timeless framework for sustainable and compassionate living.

Part 4 – Pan-Indic Ethos Gallery

The final interpretive layer expands the narrative beyond Jainism to explore the broader civilisational ethos of India.

The Pan-Indic Ethos Gallery highlights how diverse philosophical traditions across India share common ethical foundations rooted in compassion, inquiry, and the pursuit of knowledge.

Rather than presenting traditions in isolation, the gallery reveals the deep intellectual interconnectedness of India’s knowledge systems, demonstrating how Jain philosophy coexists and interacts with other streams of thought.

Through immersive storytelling and symbolic installations, visitors explore themes such as:

• the universality of non-violence
• pluralistic approaches to truth
• philosophical dialogue between traditions
• shared civilisational values.

The gallery concludes by presenting India’s civilisation as a pluralistic ecosystem of ideas, where multiple philosophical traditions collectively contribute to a deeper understanding of life and consciousness.

Experience Design

To translate philosophical ideas into compelling visitor experiences, Lokusdesign integrated multiple experiential design strategies:

• immersive scenographic environments
• multimedia storytelling installations
• spatial metaphors representing philosophical ideas
• interactive digital exhibits
• contemplative reflection spaces
• sound and light environments.

Together, these elements transform abstract concepts into memorable and emotionally resonant spatial experiences.

Impact

The Jain Experience Centre establishes a new paradigm for interpreting philosophical traditions through experiential design.

The project creates:

• a landmark cultural and educational destination
• a platform for understanding Jain philosophy in a contemporary context
• an immersive learning environment for global audiences
• a space for reflection, dialogue, and cultural exchange.

By combining scholarship with immersive storytelling, the museum enables visitors to experience Jain philosophy not merely as doctrine but as a living guide for ethical and mindful living.

Lokusdesign’s Contribution

The Jain Experience Centre demonstrates Lokusdesign’s ability to interpret complex cultural and philosophical narratives through innovative experiential design.

Through research-driven storytelling, spatial dramaturgy, and immersive environments, Lokusdesign translated a sophisticated knowledge tradition into a contemporary cultural experience.

The project stands as an example of how experiential design can transform philosophy into a compelling journey of discovery, reflection, and transformation.
