A leading oil and gas company in India, operating a nationwide network of fuel retail outlets.

Objective:

To redefine and revitalize HPCL’s retail visual identity and infrastructure to align with modern consumer expectations, enhance brand perception, and ensure a consistent customer experience across all touchpoints.

Design Challenges (with Indian Context)

1. Legacy Infrastructure:

Over 70% of India’s fuel stations were built over a decade ago, many lacking cohesive design language or modern amenities. HPCL’s wide network, with over 20,000 retail outlets, had noticeable inconsistencies in branding and customer experience.

2. Pan-India Cohesion:

India's geographical and cultural diversity—from metros like Mumbai and Delhi to rural and Tier-3 towns—meant that consumer expectations varied significantly. A unified design had to be adaptable across 29 states and 7 union territories, ensuring brand consistency without alienating local audiences.

3. Modernization with Heritage:

As a Maharatna PSU, HPCL carries strong brand heritage and public trust. The challenge was to introduce modern, appealing design elements without diluting the existing brand equity.

4. Operational Constraints:

Fuel stations in India face diverse plot configurations, traffic flows, and local municipal restrictions. Designs needed to accommodate:

◦ High-density urban zones with limited frontage
◦ Highway-side stations with large vehicle throughput
◦ Evolving needs like EV charging and smart service tech integration

Strategic Approach

• Conducted a thorough audit of existing outlets and stakeholder interviews
• Identified three core themes for design: Energy, Trust, and Progress
• Focused on visual impact, intuitive wayfinding, and customer-centric layouts
• Developed a design language system for consistency across all outlet types and sizes

1. Visual Identity System

• Introduced a bold new canopy fascia with dynamic lighting and iconic blue-red gradient
• Clean typography and revamped signage system for enhanced legibility and modern appeal

2. RVI Design

• Modular designs adaptable to varied plot sizes
• Clear zoning of forecourt, sales area, and amenities
• Consistent material palette: steel, aluminum composite panels (ACP), LED lighting

3. Customer Experience

• Intuitive drive-in and service flow
• Dedicated zones for EV charging, restrooms, and refreshments
• Branded convenience stores and waiting areas with premium finishes

4. Sustainability and Technology

• Integrated solar panels, LED lighting, and rainwater harvesting
• Digital displays for fuel pricing and promotional content
